Reference and Document Delivery Section

The Reference and Document Delivery Department of the library provides reference services in both print and electronic format. This includes a print collection of dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs, yearbooks, bibliographies, handbooks, manuals etc. It also has a collection of bibliographic databases in the form of Compact Disc Read Only Memory (CD ROM) and facilitates access to numerous online bibliographic databases in the form of internet subject gateway and other electronic publications that may include books, reports, journal articles and other electronic publications. To facilitate access to these resources the Reference section has developed a set of Guides to electronic resources available in the library. The section also develops and maintains a number of local content bibliographic databases; these are the journal article collection, biodiversity and environmental databases.

Printed reference materials can be searched via the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) while the electronic resources can be searched through computer terminals in the Reference Department.

Collections

Collections in the Reference Department include; reference materials, biodiversity and environment collections, reprint collection, and a collection of CD ROMs in different subject areas.

Facilities

This Department of the University Library has reading tables and seats that accommodate about 40 people at a time. It has 10 computer terminals available for Internet searching; among these four are also used for CD-ROM searching. One computer is also available specifically for accessing Electronic Books. This section of the library also houses satellite decoder for the Xinhua News Agency. Current National Newspapers are also available in the Reference Department. This includes the popular Daily & Sunday News, Bussiness Times, Mzalendo, Rai, Majira, Mtanzania, Nipashe, Uhuru, and many others.

This collection offers services as indicated below:

INFORMATION SERVICES

Reference materials in both print and electronic formats are located in this section. The electronic media services includes Electronic Reference Services, CD-ROM and Internet searching  and Interlibrary Loans and Document Delivery Services. Whilst the print ones include materials such as reference books such as Dictionaries, Encyclopedias and Handbooks. Other materials include local and international  magazines and newspapers.

The services provided therefore include: reading materials, reading space, document ordering and delivery, Internet and e-mail, Electronic Reference Services, Current Awareness Services (CAS), CD-ROM searching, printing and spiral binding.

 Service charges

  • CD-ROM Searching:

This service is free for members of the Library. For External Users they have to pay : For Searching 1 CD-ROM a Client is charged (Tshs.2500/= per session).

  • E-mail and Internet Services:

E-mail and Internet services are free  for staff and students whilst Tshs. 1000/= is charged to the external users.

  • Document Delivery:

The service is free to University members, and external users are charged at Tshs.2, 500/= for every 10 pages.

  • Binding:

Spiral binding is done under two categories:

Medium size - Tshs.1000/=

Large size - Tshs.2500/=

  • Printing Services:

Printing is done for materials from the CD-ROMs as well as from Internet. If the source is CD-ROM - the fee is Tshs.50/= per page, if the source is the Internet the charge is Tshs.100 p

Information Literacy:

This section conducts Information Literacy Classes and Workshops to enable users to effectively exploit printed and electronic resources which are available. Users (Undergraduates, Postgraduates, Academic & Administrative Staff) are trained in searching, accessing and evaluating information. Electronic Reference Services

The UDSM Library provides different types of e-reference services including brief answers, Web resources, research help and information about Library Collections and Services. Through the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP) support, the UDSM Library has implemented a Digital Reference Service whose main objectives are:

  • To promote the use of Electronic Library Resources and Services

  • To enable users to remotely access Reference Services provided by Librarians.

 Types of services include:

(i) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). The Questions are about services and resources provided by the Library.

ii)  Web Form / Electronic Form: This is an Electronic Form which allows users to send questions, requests or comments about opening hours and resources. To use this service, users must have an e-mail account.

(iii)  Instant Messaging / Chart Services: This is a real –time text based conversation between a Librarian and a User. To use this service, Library Users must register with MSN, Yahoo or AOL (IAM) Messengers.

(iv)  Telephone Services: Library Users can use hotline to phone and ask questions or comment on our services

Reference & Information Desk: You can also visit our main Reference Desk on the first floor of the Library and consult the Reference Librarian
